act is a very stringent set of immigration controls, which serve to reduce the number of immigrants arriving from commonwealth countries such as the Caribbean and Asia. This act is important because it very much outline the position of Britain in regards to immigration policy and due to its intense nature, has been very influential in terms of shaping policy. This act has suffered much criticism and receives praise from others. It is indeed interesting to understand the history of this act and to understand the climate from which it evolved. Britain had a very turbulent time prior to the enactment of this legislation in regards to issues of race. Therefore, this act was implemented in response to some of those issues. However, it is important to note that this legislation was far from making everyone happy. Proponents claim that it isnt strict enough while critics claim that the entire immigration control policy in Britain is completely racist. While the reality likely lies somewhere in between, it is important to understand all sides of this debate in order to clearly understand the impact of this policy on the lives of both those in Britain and those in colonized countries. By understanding all sides of this debate, it will become immediately evident just how important and influential this act has been in British political history.
