thing. That thing is determination. Educational attainment is limited by neither race, social class, or origin. It is limited only by the amount of effort an individual is willing to invest in improving themselves. Social class origin might make it harder in some instances to pursue an education but it does not make that pursuit impossible. Nor does it limit the final educational attainment. That said, it is important to acknowledge that there are, in fact, many factors that can contribute to some individuals accomplishing less in terms of educational attainment than others. When this occurs, of course, these individuals are often penalized heavily and even restricted to the lower echelons of society once they completed their education. Marger in "Race and Ethnic Relations : American And Global Perspectives" notes that many of the problems which confront us today extend back to the original colonization of this country by the Europeans who invaded the homelands of the Native Americans. Similar occurrences have occurred all over the world between what Marger (7) chooses to call the "dominant culture" and the indigenous inhabitants of the countries which they invaded or the "subdominant cultures" who eventually settled there. The situation has become progressively more complex in modern society with the continued immigration into established societies of those of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. There are, in fact, many examples of where social origin can make educational attainment difficult. Blacks, for example, are a major cultural component of this world but they continue to suffer from the same social stratification which keeps other non-white races subdued.
