Furthermore, the growing number of immigrants seeking better lives and opportunities in America has also added to the growing diversity of the American work force. Women, gays, the disabled, African Americans, Hispanics, and many others fill an increasing number of jobs and their contributions are significant from both an economic and a productivity standpoint. Understanding this diversity is important both from an employer and an employee perspective, as the trend toward diversity will continue well into the future. Todays communities and jobs interact with the world community routinely, and therefore depend upon a diverse labor force in order to meet the growing demands of their business and their position within the international marketplace. Furthermore, technology has served to create an entirely new reality in the workplace, and an entirely new way of conducting business. The end result is that the inherent nature of business itself has changed, and new paradigms are being created to manage the differences. In this way, diversity benefits everyone, because it allows for new and creative labor solutions which are applicable to todays modern companies. The labor force in the United States is one of great diversity. While there has been much controversy in recent years about immigration in this country, the reality is that immigration provides a rich source of labor in the U.S., and is evidence of both ethnic and racial diversity1. The problem of course, is that a great many of the immigrants in the United States are also poor, making their place in labor one of much more dependence than many other workers.
