that time people were excited about learning through correspondence courses or taking classes on television. The idea of being able to learn while sitting in ones own easy chair and
avoiding rush hour has been attractive to students of all ages as well as to their teachers. Learning can be accomplished at a distance from the university or other school
setting and while the advantages of telecommuting are obvious, there are disadvantages that for many override the positive aspects of distance learning. Before delving into this topic it is important
to define the subject. What is distance learning? Many people do not know what distance learning is beyond a vague notion of "people talking to one another over a television
monitor " (Gee, 1997, p.PG). However, today, distance learning often involves the use of a computer. And while there are courses one can take exclusively at a distance, many schools
combine distance and traditional techniques. Students often communicate with their professors online through the use of email and many educators are creating their own websites in order to convey information,
give assignments and post grades. Much of todays educational lifestyles include some type of distance learning. Yet, the computer has not taken over the educational paradigm yet, nor has other
media. There is a great deal of clinging to the older, more traditional teaching methods. Distance learning does have drawbacks and the obvious ones are that there is no
true classroom interaction on a human level. There can be, or at least there is a potential for effecting such a model, but generally students who choose distance learning exclusively
will lose social skills. They are not on campus if they are in their own bedrooms and so they will be excluded from other college activities. This objection is always
