Experts promote the idea that distance learning promotes participation by students who would never voluntarily participate in group discussions in a traditional face-to-face classroom setting (Schulte, 2004). The computer and Internet provide a safer environment for these students who are too shy or reticent to offer comments, ask questions or otherwise engage in verbal communication in the traditional classroom. Tilson and colleagues (2001) also reported that "students are more likely to participate in an online discussion and to disclose more about themselves than during an in-class discussion" (p. 488). A variety of options exist in the distance learning course for students to become actively engaged in group discussions (Schulte, 2004). For instance, there are discussion boards, group projects, chat rooms, Instant Messaging, and e-mail (Schulte, 2004). These options allow every student to participate in discussions and/or to at least post their ideas. For example, Schulte (2004) posted a discussion question to which each enrolled student was to respond by a certain date. Students had to log into the course Web site and post their responses (Schulte, 2004). Tilson and colleagues (2001) provided an example of a guided inquiry activity in a Web-based course: students are introduced to a virtual patient through a video that presents the patients symptoms and are presented with the question "What is the most likely differential diagnosis based on the symptoms and interview" (Tilson et al, 2001, p. 488) shown in the video. The next question to the students is what diagnostic examinations should be conducted and what other information is needed about the patient (Tilson et al, 2001).
