Therefore, Lees study examines the perceptual differences between administrators and faculty members within the overall context of instruction support in regards to distance education (2002). Instructional support refers to the kinds of support that an institution provides faculty members in order to for them to develop and improve their instruction (Lee, 2002). This generally comes from individuals who have specialties in certain areas in which faculty members need training and assistance in order to conduct their classes effectively (Lee, 2002). Specialists include "instructional designers, editors, technicians, graphic designers, radio and/or television producers, teaching assistants and librarians" (Lee, 2002, p.27). Citing Olcott and Wright, Lee indicates that instructional support, such as establishing training and providing release-time for course development, is one of the principal elements in successful distance education. Frequently, faculty members have received little or no instructional support prior to receiving as assignment to teach a distance education course and that this lack pervades higher education institutions (Lee, 2002). Based on an extensive literature review, Le arrived at four main conclusions, which are as follows: 1. The review reveals lack of instructional support in distance education and faculty themselves want to receive it. 2. Higher education institutions provide limited instructional support to faculty in distance education. 3. Faculty members are concerned about the availability of instructional support services, such as course redesign, training in the use and applications of distance technologies, training in teaching methods, technical consulting, teaching assistants, graphic work and editing. 4. In spite of the fact that the administrator is the source of providing instructional support to faculty, the research relating to instructional support in distance education has neglected to investigate how administrators perceive instructional support in their own institutions (Lee, 2002, p. 28). ...
