question, he wrote what he called the first meditation of philosophy. In this, he declared that it was important for him to wait a sufficient amount of time,
until he was a mature man to undertake a book of this nature. At first he felt he had to be void of all previous beliefs. His previous beliefs were
based on faith. One cannot get a new perspective on anything new if they are holding on to beliefs so tightly as to not see anything else maybe possible.
This whole idea of purging oneself of all previous knowledge is really not possible. The closest one can come to that is to create a
doubt about that knowledge. It is a matter of taking an absolute position and stripping it of its dogmatic stand and imposing the question on it: What else is possible?
So one of the contributions of Descartes is this idea of unknowing in order to discover other truths. It is through this doubt that one is able to see other
possibilities. And if one can see other possibilities then growth is possible within the person. This attitude can also be imposed on the growth and maturity of society.
Most people like an ordered existence. It makes them feel comfortable with the real uncertainty of life. Descartes made "doubt" a good thing, a organic process.
Even though universal doubt is pervasive in the minds of men, it is the cause of asking questions and seeking answers. Which is the scientific method.
