In one form of alternative medicine, Cranial Osteopathy gentle manipulation and realignment of the cranial bones is often used to correct displacements caused by trauma to the head,
dental work, muscular spasms, etc. Developed in the U.S. this procedure is usually practiced as a specialization by osteopaths, and practitioners who use the technique espouse its benefit to
the whole nervous system. They have even found it surprisingly effective in the treatment of high blood pressure, headaches and stomach ulcers (Friedman, Gilliar and Glassman, 2000). In
the 1980s a group of these practitioners developed a method of using the technique to help very young babies -- especially those who have had difficult births, repeated bouts of
colic and other symptoms of somatic distress. It was shown that with treatment all generally showed a marked improvement in their conditions (Friedman, Gilliar and Glassman, 2000,
