the night. There is no doubt that counseling for the homeless is an essential component of finding a solution out of that situation
by way of understanding the individuals unique circumstances and providing viable options to remedy them. Many times this entails addressing a mental health problem or drug/alcohol dependency, which necessitates
someone who is trained to address such problems; however, the prevalence of external circumstances other than mental instability or addictive behavior - such as job loss, domestic abuse - has
also become an important focus of counsel training for todays homelessness. At its very core, the main goal behind counseling the homeless is to "become independent of street life
and homeless shelters, develop self-esteem, and move toward productive lifestyles" (Whelan, 2002), all of which requires the shelter worker to understand the psychosocial approaches through appropriate counseling skills.
Homelessness is not merely a representation of societys mentally unstable or lazy population; rather, it is a realistic view of how corporate downsizing and cutbacks
are affecting the very core of the working population. Likewise, it is also a reflection of how spousal abuse has reached epidemic proportions, because escaping an abusive relationship is
