The level of goods and services provided worldwide has increased steadily, but the movement of these goods has increased exponentially and this has meant increased use of contracts between international partners. Trading patterns depend on many factors, but one pattern is very discernable, there appear t be many links between former colonial powers and their colonies. The reasons behind this may be complex, not only due to aspects such as colonial guilt, but also the common background and understanding. The UK had had many colonies; the remnants of the colonial power remain in part through the Commonwealth. Trade with former colonies has caught the attention of the media and the lawyers in many areas, for example trade with bananas between the UK and the former Caribbean colonies. This might be an area which has gained attention, but we can also look to the east where there are trade relationships between the former Asian colonies. Pakistan is a former colony that gained independence in 1947 when the British split British India into modern India and Pakistan. Trade continues with both of these areas. If we are considering a trading relationship with Pakistan then it is important to understand both the legal and the corporate governance background to both the UK and Pakistan.
