God sent Jesus Christ "to point the way forward with his teachings," and that salvation for all those who believe in him?that is, that all believers in Jesus will experience a positive afterlife (Hill; Watkins 56). God is viewed by Christians as having been expressed on earth through the life of Jesus, and that his life and teachings set a pattern for all humanity (Hill; Watkins 56). A central tenet of Christian faith is the doctrine pertaining to the Fall (Hill; Watkins 58). Because of its sinfulness, humanity is not longer in alignment with the perfection of God, therefore, the sacrifice of Jesus was necessary (Hill; Watkins 58). Jesus life made an acceptable sacrifice because of the doctrine of the Trinity. In other words, God has three modes of existence?Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Jesus is essentially viewed by Christians as being synonymous with God, or rather that God, in Jesus, took on human form. Christian practice can be divided into two major groups?Roman Catholic and Protestant. While Protestants can be subdivided into countless smaller sects, these churches have similar practices and beliefs. They basically deviated from Roman Catholicism by denying that the leader of the Church, the Pope, was omnipotent, and that the intervention of priests between the faithful and God was a necessary component of worship. Nevertheless, there is still common ground between these two groups on Christian practices. All Christian churches, for example, have some sort of ceremony that confirms the acceptance of a new member into the group. Exactly how Baptism should be conducted, however, is one of the issues that has caused schisms sufficient enough to start new sects.
