The nurse with a BSN can take many roles in the health care environment. One of the most interesting of these roles, however, occurs in our interaction with the elderly populace. The nurse who takes a position in community health position targeting the elderly population, for example, is faced with a number of unique considerations. Not only is such a position one of the most rapidly growing opportunities available for nursing professionals it is also one of the most challenging and rewarding. This is an arena where the nurse has the opportunity to make a significant impact in the health care of a very deserved population. The change in demographics which has resulted from the Baby Boom (the increase in the proportion of individuals over sixty-five as opposed to the portion under sixty-five) has toppled our countrys demographics from one with a majority of contributors to a majority of those who currently depend on the coverage of programs such as the Social Security Program and Medicare/Medicaid. Obviously most of these individuals can be categorized as elderly. The situation can be expected to become even more top-heavy in the near future, however. This presents potentially severe consequences for the economics of elder care. The stakeholders in this scenario, however, is the American public in general. While, as will be noted below, the economics of elder health care is worsening, it is imperative that our ethical commitment to our elderly citizens be completed. Consequently, our tax base must continue to fuel a significant portion of elder programs such as those that will be fulfilled by community health nurses all over the nation.
