Communications can take place in different ways, this has resulted in divergent communications model being developed; Eisenberg and Goodall (2004) put forward four models communication, communication as information transfer, as a transactional process, as strategic control, and as a balance of creativity and constraint. The models may be seen as reflecting the chronological development of the study of communication and the models are also reflective and incorporate the different formats of communication, as put forward by Holmes (2005) where there are three approaches; there is face to face interaction, there is mediated interaction and quasi interaction. The first of the modes of communication may also be seen as the simplest model, as well as one which is the most basic. In this information transfer model a typical definition is that this is simply "exchange of information and the transmission of meaning" (Eisenberg and Goodall, 2004). This is an approach which is argued that communication can be perceived as a metaphoric pipeline, which is used to facilitate the flow of information from one person to another person (Eisenberg and Goodall, 2004). In this model communication is a tool which is utilized by individuals in order to achieve their objectives. There are certain assumptions which are fundamental to this model. Basic is the concept of language and its ability to communicate feelings and thoughts between individuals (Eisenberg and Goodall, 2004).
