Comic books are not meant to replace reality, but rather they insert small yet potent imaginary episodes into which an individual can dissolve when fantasy and escapism beckon. The entire aura of comic books begins with the process of choosing which super hero will take center stage while the reader anticipates savoring the characters fantastic feats of courage in the privacy of his or her own domain. Conspicuously apparent to selecting the most appropriate comic book is determining which flight of fancy one wants to follow that particular day, a decision that cannot be taken lightly. Indeed, the sometimes-overwhelming sense of pleasure that accompanies such a task can be just as illuminating as reading the actual comic book, which is why one must take great care in choosing the most appropriate character and story line for that particular moment. Understanding the motivation behind reading comic books is paramount to perceiving the importance of such a seemingly good-for-nothing activity. The elements of fantasy and escapism are essential to perpetuate a creative and productive mind; comic books, while appearing to project little more than superficial entertainment, provide these important components that are just as necessary for children as they are for adults.
