FOUNDATIONS OF ADOLESCENT CLINICAL DEPRESSION While depression may be an equal opportunity disease for adolescents, the manner by which it is initially cultivated and ultimately manifested is quite different between the genders. Scientific research has suggested that a combination of social, cultural and environmental factors is collectively at work to individualize the often covert and sometimes overt gender responses that trigger depression and such secondary results as suicide. The extent to which depression in females has myriad causes and theories speaks to the vastness of such a debilitating mental disease. Chemical imbalance, eating disorders, stress, emotional trauma and a whole host of other potential causes - some genetic, others environmental and still others gender-related - have made young women "twice as likely as men to develop depression" (Anonymous, 2003, p. 7). The manner by which depression overtakes each gender is a varied as how the illness is ultimately manifested. While males may internalize their disease, females typically express it through emotional demonstration. There is no concrete equation as to why young men react differently than young women to the same stimuli, whether that particular motivational factor happens to stem from external forces or internal distress.
