voluminous body of scientific literature indicates that children who are sexually molested suffer a variety of physical, psychological, and social damage because of their victimization. Adults who sexually abuse
children are considered to be among the most serious deviants in our society (Durkin ppg) Most members of society call these deviants, monsters or perverts; yet unfortunately most of
us, also have heard the terms pedophile and child molester. Yet these terms are often thought to be interchangable. The term "pedophilia" typically refers to a sexual orientation
or preference, whereas the term "child molestation" normally refers to actual behavior. A pedophile is an adult "whose sexual fantasies and erotic imagery focuses on children as sexual partners"
On the other hand, the actual child molester is an adult "who engages in any type of sexual activity with individuals legally defined as children." Not all pedophiles
commit acts of child molestation. However, even if a pedophile does not molest children, he may participate in related activities that are unlawful such as the possession of child
pornography. Although there have been a few cases of women committing acts of child molestation, virtually all pedophiles are male (Durgin ppg). What about the victims of these
criminals - the children? While we might guess that a child would develop a sensitivity around his own sexuality, what often seems to happen is that the child identifies
with the power of the perpetrator, and often victimizes other children, to experience that power for himself. And the cycle of child sexual abuse continues to spin.
