book Black Marxism is regarded by many as an unheralded masterpiece that has not received the recognition and critical claim that it justly deserves (West 51). Despite the widespread acceptance of the value of black and ethnic studies in broadening the perceptions of students from the cultural mainstream, i.e., white, many students have culturally embedded resistance to opening their minds to a different cultural viewpoint. The following is a hypothetical letter from one friend to another concerning the advantages to be gained from taking a black studies course. The premise is that the two students have long been interested in the philosophical ramifications of political theory on history and their society. They are still in the process of trying to figure out how society ticks and the friend writing the correspondence has realized through a course in black studies that her previous perception was distinctly ethnocentric and Eurocentric. The following is what the friend might say to communicate a newfound enthusiasm for learning how to empathize with a different cultural perspective.
