Tomas Lopez Ramirez, in his short story "Sad Though Brief the Rituals," and Hima Contreras in her short story, "The Fire," present very similar views of devious women. Through these secondary characters, both authors offer an interpretation of women that sees females as predators, who use their feminine allure to trap male protagonists into actions that are not only immoral, but detrimental to their own personal safety and integrity. Ramirezs narrator begins his story by relating that it is "honor of his memory," referring to the manager of a resort hotel that closed because it became unprofitable. The narrator obviously feels guilt toward the manager, as he relates that he was one of those who had the "thankless task of keeping the run-down hotel going" (Ramirez 77). As he relates the story of the decline of the hotel, it slowly unfolds that a young Haitian woman, Francoise, played a pivotal role. The manager felt highly attracted to Francoise, but she felt attracted to the narrator. The manager soon concentrates solely on Francoise, overlooking a serious problem that has developed in the hotel, which is that some employees is making small peepholes in the guests doors. The guests start leaving the hotel in protest. A sadistic triangle evolves in which the narrator and Francoise systematically tease and torture the manager. The narrator comments that "Francoise would lavish her attentions on me and became increasingly diffident towards him" (Ramirez 79). Yet, when the manager asked the narrator what Francoise was saying, he would intimate that the old man had a chance with the young woman. It then occurs to the narrator how he could have complete control over the manager. He comments to Francoise, that she agreed because "you thought it was funny" (Ramirez 79).
