to the countries growing population and argue that it makes no sense for the country to still be allowing immigration at the same rate that it was ninety years ago when the country held one-quarter of the people that it does today (Cosh). One of the biggest complaints of those who oppose the current immigration levels is that the immigrants who are arriving in Canada are largely unskilled (Cosh). Another complaint is that Quebec, which has maneuvered itself into a position where its separatist government can independently decide the number of immigrants it will allow in, still gets approximately one-third of the national immigration budget (Cosh). Although some contest the exact way immigration statistics are calculated, the numbers would indicate that the majority of immigrants to Canada are in fact skilled laborers or at the very lest family members of skilled laborers. Canada groups its immigrants into categories according to their educational and employment skills. Essentially immigrants fall into two classes, the economic class and the family class. The economic class is those immigrants which meet and Canadas educational, linguistic, and business experience requirements (Cosh). Family class, as the name would suggest is those newly arriving immigrants who are family members of existing immigrants (Cosh). In 1994 forty-three percent of Canadian immigrants were grouped into the economic class (Cosh). This number rose to fifty percent in 1995 with the final goal being to obtain fifty-three percent of immigrants with the business, educational and language skills which will give them a competitive edge in becoming productive Canadian citizens (Cosh). Comparatively Canada has one-tenth the population of the United States but presently admits up to five time the number of immigrants that are admitted into the United States (Filipino Reporter). ...
