opera, village opera and Huaguxi, which is also classified as so-called "Flower Drum Opera." In this paper, well examine two types of
opera that were popular in ancient China (and are still seen today) and will determine how these artistic media reflected society.
As an aside, though the request was to find information on shadow opera and village opera, the literature was sparse on these two issues. Its hoped that the student can
take the information from the sources used in this paper and modify them to fit his or her particular project. The truth is, there are more than 300 types of
regional Chinese opera, and some have survived to this day and are enjoyed for their historical aspect and their beauty. But
at the time these were produced, they represented education of different ways and, in many cases, rebellion against the norm. Flower Drum Opera
Huaguxi Opera, also known as "Flower Drum" opera was first seen in Chinas Hunan province, with the first mention of it in 1695 (Chen, 1995). The origins of Huaguxi
were likely for socialization and relaxation -- the first actors were off-season farmers, primarily male, with women not being allowed to perform until early in the 20th century (Chen, 1995).
