better understand the religion of Buddhism as it clarifies each one and enables one to see the different elements of each, thus leading to a better understanding of one. The following paper examines different elements of Buddhism and Islam in an attempt to better understand Buddhism. Buddhism and Islam The first topic of consideration and comparison/contrast are the topics of theistic and atheistic in relationship to religion. The notion of theism involves the notion, or belief, in God. The notion of atheism is that which involves no real belief in a God. One author notes, in relationship to Buddhism, "The fundamental philosophy of Buddhism seems to deny the concept of a personal God, although it is controversial whether Buddhism denies an impersonal form of God."1 What this means is that while Buddhists do not really believe in a God, perse, they do believe in a universal reality that could well be defined as God. In the case of Islam there is a very strong theistic content. The Islamic people believe in Allah, who is God. Their religion is one that upholds the notion of a God, adheres to the laws of that God, and ultimately believes that God is responsible for everything. In Buddhism one could argue that it is the souls of the people who are responsible, and that there is a larger picture that is not really connected to one particular being, but to all beings combined.
