years. This year (2007) alone over 1.8 million m.t. of additional benzene capacity will be put in place by producers (Chemical Week, 2007). By 2010 capacity is projected as exceeding 2006 capacity by some 10 million m.t. (Chemical Week, 2007). Benzene is used in a variety of commercial applications. Unfortunately, that use also comes with considerable health risks. Historically benzene has been produced primarily from pyrolysis gasoline. The extract is the by-product of a process called steam cracking (Chemical Week, 2007). Benzene has also produced from a product called reformate (Chemical Week, 2007). While these two sources of origin will remain of primary importance in the future, a new emphasis on an old production method will rely more heavily on touline transalkylation (Chemical Week, 2007). Toulene extraction also occurs on a limited basis from the steelmaking byrproduct coal tar (Chemical Week, 2007). The hydrodealkylation and disproportionation processes of the past are now receiving less emphasis in terms of benzene production (Chemical Week, 2007). Benzene is used in a wide variety of products. These products are not only industrial in nature, they include those that have direct consumer contact. Some dental adhesives and even soft drinks, for example, have benzene in them (National Post, 2007). This is despite an agreement between the petroleum industry and the government that was made in 1978 promising to exclude benzene in consumer products (Egilman, Kol, Hegg, et. al., 2007). Even when benzene is not included intentionally in these products it can manifest (National Post, 2007). One of the problems that has recently been confronted in the soft drink industry, for example, is the possibility ...
