A month by month guide is included which suggests that even at the age of one month, the baby is able to determine the response time to his or her crying. This is something that interestingly becomes an argument amongst parents and pediatricians. Can picking babies up spoil them? While experts and those who parent in the twenty-first century generally understand that one cannot "spoil" a one month old, grandparents and some pediatricians still provide contrary advice. The article further points out that between four and six months of age, the infant is able to discern what changes and what stays the same and by the time the infant reaches the age of seven months or so, he or she is able to understand the consequences of their own actions. For example, at this age, a baby will generally be able to stand up and maybe even take a step without holding on. Some babies walk as early as nine or ten months. But they soon realize that they may fall down too. All of the things that the author points out suggests that the babys development occurs quite rapidly. One incredible discovery that is noted by authors is the babys understanding of difficult physical concepts. For instance, Begley notes that a baby seeing something suspended in mid-air will be amazed as if they understand the law of gravity. This brings up many questions about how infants learn and whether some of the knowledge comes from the collective unconscious. At the same time, the knowledge that infants know more than once was thought brings up new paradigms for teaching and the controversy regarding whether the children are being taught too early in too structured an environment.
