This paper discusses three antiquities found at the Art Institute in Chicago, and what they tell us about their civilizations. Discussion The three works come from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, some of the oldest civilizations on earth. The first is in the Egyptian collection: the Mummy Head Cover from the 1st century B.C. The artwork was loaned to the Oriental Institute, also in Chicago, from 1941 to 1993, when it was returned to the Art Institute. It was provided to the museum by the William M. Willner Fund in 1910 (Mummy Head Covering). According to the information provided on the exhibit, it is made of cartonnage, decorated with pigment and gold leaf; it is a fairly large mask, measuring 18 1/8 x 13 1/8 x 11 inches (Mummy Head Covering). Cartonnage is defined as "[L]inen or papyrus held together by glue and molded into coffins and funeral masks" ("Cartonnage"). The mask then is relatively cheap material with gorgeous decoration, made with a great deal of skill. The mask is complex and covers the head, neck and shoulders. The persons hair (its difficult to determine the gender of the individual) is pushed behind their ears and drops to the chest in two long columns. The mask is covered with gold leaf with lapis on the hair and crown; the eyes, which are large and focused directly on the viewer, also appear to be blue. ...
