society or era. In many ways examining the art of any time period or culture will tell the viewer a great deal about the society in which it was created.
The following paper examines how art, as a form of expression in Russia and the United States, impacts society in many ways. Art as Expression in Society Art as
expression in Russia has long been a very passionate and idealistic vision, but also one that has been thwarted by the government in the past. One author states that during
the time following WWII, "The Soviet Union...was committed to crude socialist realism, suppressing other kinds of art like abstract expressionism" (Contemporary Art, 2006). Particular types of art were allowed and
nothing truly subversive or political was allowed until recent times, following the fall of the Berlin wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. With those realities came more freedom
in terms of expression in art. But, at the same time Russia has essentially been ignored by the rest of the world as it stumbles for direction and experiences incredible
conditions of poverty during their particular reconstruction. Clearly such a time would evoke many forms of creative artistic expression in the society, and such would also incite people to openly
acknowledge realities they were previously afraid to express. In terms of some of the contemporary art coming out of Russia in the past few years one author notes, "Moscows
