"A lingering question of priorities: Athletic budgets and academic performance revisited" by Meier, et al. It deals with the necessity of keeping a balance between academics and athletics in high schools. The authors write that in general, most people believe that "extra-curricular activities within the school system are perceived to have a positive academic impact on students" (Meier et al, 2004, p. 799). While a great deal of research indicates that extra-curricular activities do have many positive effects, including reducing dropout rates and delinquency, "the impact of athletics on academic performance of the entire school remains an open question" (Meier et al, 2004, p. 799). Meier writes that it is possible for the athletics program to become so important to a school that it starts to have a potential negative impact on the academic studies (Meier et al, 2004). The central question of the article is how a school can manage what are two disparate, competing goals: to have a strong athletic program and still graduate students who perform to a high academic standard (Meier et al, 2004). The central research problem was how to measure how (and whether) expenditures made on athletic programs have an impact, either positive or negative, on the "over-all academic performance" of a school district (Meier et al, 2004, p. 799). The study was undertaken because it is of great concern to school districts all across the country. The "clash" between athletics and academics is a well-established one and is of great concern. The study found that when athletics and academics are considered in individual schools, there is a "positive relationship between athletics and student performance" (Meier et al, 2004, p. 799).
