Since one of the main points of using comparative source documents is to assess the different perspectives on a theme which are
offered by different authors, it is useful to choose several sources which offer contrasting views, and then decide which, if any, gives the most accurate picture of the situation or
events being analysed. If we take as the issue to be addressed the success or failure of public welfare and education programmes in Johnsons Great Society policy, for example, it
is possible to look not only at the aims and objectives which Johnson himself set out for his administrations policies, but also two contrasting viewpoints, from Califano and Matusow, on
whether these policies were successful.
In his Remarks at the University of Michigan (p 174) Johnson described the Great Society as being founded on abundance and liberty for all and an end to poverty
and racial injustice, which he saw as the foundation for a better life for all Americans, rather than the social and economic divisions which characterised the country at the time.
He saw communities in
this society as satisfying the need for commerce . . and the need for beauty and felt that this could be achieved by ensuring that education, social welfare, health care
