and while alternative medicine is something that is really an alternative to conventional medicine, complementary medicine traditionally supports mainstream fare but adds something to it. For example, a physician may prescribe an antibiotic for bronchitis but tell the patient to add zinc or Vitamin C or echinacea to the regimen. Vitamins and herbs are not considered mainstream and so the physician is complementing traditional medicine with alternatives. Yet, when delving into the world of holistic, alternative and complementary medicine, it pays to define and differentiate between the terms. Although it is helpful to know just what the terms mean, they are not easily defined. There is controversy and different definitions floating about. Holistic health for example, has been described as a philosophy that is aligned with the idea that health is something that is actively achieved and associated with nontraditional practices (Taylor, 2003). It seems to be almost the same thing as alternative medicine, which is exactly as it sounds. Once again, alternative medicine includes activities that are not mainstream. However, while the term holistic medicine was once popular, most people call such types of medicine alternative (MacIntosh, 1999). To an extent, the term is confusing and archaic (1999). There is in fact no particular system that is called holism (1999). Rather, holistic medicine is really alternative. At the same time, there is a sense that the idea of holism refers to the idea that body and mind are aligned. Holism looks at the whole body, mind and soul and there is a sense of wholeness. Of course, alternative practices generally embrace the notion of wholeness as well.
