graphic arts as Carson apparently continues to work on many different projects in many different venues. The following paper examines and analyzes some of the art work of David Carson. An Essay on the Art Work of David Carson David Carson was born in California in 1952 (Art and Culture 2009). It is interesting to note that, at first, he seems to have been considering a career in sociology as he graduated from San Diego state university with his degree in sociology (Carson 2009). It is also interesting, and important, to note that he was also a very good surfer, ranking ninth in the world while he was in college (Carson 2009). This likely influenced one of his very first publishing endeavors for in 1990 he "shocked the design community with the first issue of the surf magazine, Beach Culture" (Art and Culture 2009). The work, the illustrations, in this magazine were very risky in relationship to their chaotic nature but still it seems he drew many fans through his hard to decipher illustrations and he became, one could claim, all but an instant sensation. It seems that one of his unique approaches to media was presenting pages somewhat out of order, which apparently were laid out in a manner that would logically, and eventually, lead readers to the correct pages. This became a large part of his sort of art, in relationship to the chaos that was also logical and understandable. For example, "Carson continued to intrigue the design community with spread-out, inverted, mixed-font type in both advertisements and magazine layouts for other clients" (Art and Culture 2009).
