The initial and subsequent chapters delve deeply into the historical Liberty Men and their resistance movement as it related to the region they attempted to settle, in spite of Great Proprietors rebellious efforts. The Great Proprietors were instrumental in prescribing autonomy across the land and, as a result, posed considerable grief for the Liberty Men, whose continued resistance resembled the manner in which the patriots opposed Parliament. It was not long before the Liberty Men came to represent the Revolution, as well as what stood for the American society. Chapter by chapter, Taylors extraordinary recounting of the reasons why there existed so much discord between the Liberty Men and the Great Proprietors allows the reader to gain significant insight to some of the more hidden subtleties that otherwise might not be acknowledged. Effectively sorting through the myriad personalities that molded the period, as well as discussing what motives may have been instrumental in the dissension -- including those that are both obvious and quite obscure -- Taylor clearly identifies the various reasons why the contention was so apparent. Also indicative of the authors clear-sighted perceptions is his exemplary way of addressing the how these longstanding conflicts stood to ultimately establish and characterize Americas economic and political status.
