industry occurred in 1978, and the airlines existing at the time determined that their might would be necessary for saving the businesses they had built over the decades. The industry had never been competitive at all, and the entire notion of competition was new to all involved. New entrants had great hopes, but then tried to behave in the same manner as the old, established airlines. Those old ones soon swallowed them up through acquisition. The controlling organizations attempted to make no changes in the ways they conducted their businesses, other than to acquire any smaller airline that became problematic in any given market. Very few were managed well enough to resist; Southwest Airlines is a notable exception. The industry is highly competitive and large airlines typically seek to eliminate the sources of their competition rather than alter practices. The purpose here is to analyze the airline industry according to Porters five forces: power of buyers, power of suppliers, threat of new entrants; substitutes; and competitive rivalry. Power of Buyers Buyers - i.e., passengers - had few choices available to them in the days prior to deregulation. Fares were fixed and the federal government had the final say on which markets specific airlines would serve. Many smaller airlines came into existence after deregulation, however, giving passengers many more choices. Porter maintains that when all other factors are equal, consumers will choose to shop on price (Coulter, 2002).
