who was (yawn) tackling Hollywood and Los Angeles during the late 1930s. Though society has had enough of the "starving artists take on the big city" types of scenarios in books, Ask the Dust is somewhat different in its approach. For one thing, he doesnt tend to sugarcoat the whole event as most fiction writers (or even autobiographical writers are wanting to do). The first scene, in fact, isnt too sugary at all - instead, its stark realism. How many other books would begin "Either I paid up or I got out?" The first paragraph of this book sets the tone so perfectly, so starkly, its almost frightening. Fantes solution? Turn out the lights and forget about it. Another aspect of this book that is well-handled is the first-person narrative. This is a tough one to accomplish - too many authors tend to be self-conscious about it; theyre either overly arrogant or they just tend to focus on their own narrow world. But Fante does well in first person - theres no ego involved at all in his prose. Through out the piece, Fante is more of a recorder of whats going on in his own emotions, as well as a narrator of whats going on in the outside world, rather than someone who is putting his first-person narrative on the page to simply satisfy some ego-thing inside himself. As mentioned before, he also pours raw emotion into his story, especially when he describes Los Angeles, part in the tone of an adversary (his descriptions of Olive Street in the first chapter are worthy of re-reading) and almost as a lover.
