In 2007, after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConnor left the Court, the news came out that her husband John OConnor, who had Alzheimers Disease and was in assisted living care, had fallen in love with another woman (When Alzheimers Patients Fall in Love, 2007). According to Robin Dessel, an expert on dementia at the Hebrew Home in Riverdale, NY, OConnors situation was not an isolated one; because dementia tends to wipe minds clean of memory, sometimes such affairs occur in assisted living centers (When Alzheimers Patients Fall in Love, 2007). These arent acts of betrayal or adultery, Dessel insists, but rather, relationships in real time in which both parties are reaching out toward one another for comfort, happiness and connection (When Alzheimers Patients Fall in Love, 2007). In a situation in which those with Alzheimers patients no longer have regular contact with their spouses and who require that human contact, such affairs help fill a need for these patients, and families, for the most part, are supportive, recognizing that the patients happiness comes first (When Alzheimers Patients Fall in Love, 2007).
