Man has since the beginnings of Christianity believed this right to be an inherent privilege bestowed upon him by God when the Creator gave man, above all of his other creations, the ability to reason. This sense of superiority as interpreted by man, however, did not stop short at the animal kingdom, but extended to include an entire half of the human race, for man from the beginning viewed himself as a level above woman in existence. This concept has been reinforced by mans interpretation of the Bible, an interpretation that for centuries held the view that woman, since she was created from the rib of man, was not an extension of himself, but instead a lower form of himself. Man carried this view with him as he emerged from life in the caves and went about constructing a society and a civilization. Man shaped this society to fit his needs, and in it he formed a status level for woman that was in keeping with his views, one that placed her below him on the ladder of humanity. According to his plan, woman became the obedient servant in a world controlled and dominated by man. Man became the sole voice and opinion of his created universe, representing both the male and female factors with his reasoning and observation. For centuries this tradition prevailed, but the universe man constructed for himself was doomed for destruction, for his reasoning had never allowed for the adequate representation of the female gender. It had only allowed man to believe that he had accomplished this feat. During the political turmoil and the clamor for rights and freedom that marked the last part of the eighteenth century, a radical publication surfaced that questioned mans right to superiority ...
