While they are very different stories they are also stories that hold similarities as well. The following paper compares and contrasts the two stories and their main characters, illustrating how both women, in the end, come to find a very important part of their own identity. A Pair of Tickets and Why I Live at the P.O. In Amy Tans story she tells of her journey to China. Her mother is dead and she is traveling to China to reunite with her two half-sisters that her mother had essentially lost during times of war in China. This is a very different sort of story than Weltys, which is not a story about the main character taking a journey. In Weltys story the main character lives with her family and there is a great deal of discord that develops throughout the story, leading her to leave home and move into the P.O. where she works in a very small town. It is clear from this simply summary of both stories that they are very different. Tans is a story about meeting people and finding some sort of closure on the past wherein her mother lost her two daughters, and Tan finding her sisters and reuniting the family. Weltys story is one of powerful discord and the separation of family. In this difference, however, also lies a similarity. As each story is about family and the separation of coming together of family they are both stories that possess each of these elements.
