Introduction A companys shareholders want to know how effectively management is using the shareholders original investment and retained earnings to make profit for them. Motorola performed rather poorly here as well, with a percentage of only 4.82 percent as compared to 18.22 percent and 21.07 percent for the industry and sector averages respectively. Motorolas performance improved only slightly with five-year average of 10.54 percent, outperforming the five-year industry average of 8.17 percent but still not keeping up with the sector average of 19.92 percent (America Online). While Motorola is not in a completely risky financial position at this time, neither is it in an optimum place financially. Motorola needs to improve its percentages in order to be in a less risky financial situation. II. History of the Company While Motorola was once the industry leader in mobile phone production, it is in the number three spot right now behind Nokia and Ericsson. Forty percent of Motorolas sales are made up of cellular products, and twenty-five percent of sales are attributed to its line of semiconductors. Other products include two-way radios, pagers, computers, and networking peripherals. Nearly half of Motorolas sales are from outside the United States and it has business dealings in forty other countries. III.
