It is important to realize that in such a topic in psychology, one size does not fit all. Today, adolescents may be found in a variety of circumstances, unlike the past where most children were raised in safer environments. Some families with teens are wealthy while others are homeless. Some have intact Leave It to Beaver type families whereas others are from one parent homes. Some do not know who their fathers are, or if they do, where they are. Clearly, some circumstances create situations where adolescents are more vulnerable than others. Still, certain common themes run through the literature on the emotional and psychological development of adolescents and these should be explored. One common mistake that people make when figuring out teenagers is that they see adolescents as miniature adults (Campbell, 1936). That is, because adolescents seem to be adult in so many ways--they date, they drive, they have jobs--they are treated as such, but the reality is that they are more like children emotionally than they are like adults (1936). Such a realization is inspiring. It can also be alarming. Many children are given responsibilities that are well beyond what their emotional makeup can handle. Because they are given a great deal of responsibility, many teens make decisions that seem reasonable at the time, but are ones that they will regret later on. That is why they generally need parental support and guidance as they make their way through the emotionally tumultuous journey of adolescence. II.
