The concept of universal happiness is an ideological goal which is both admirable and desirable. However, achieving this in a world where commercial enterprises have double standards where different ethics are applied depending upon the context of a country in which a company is operating is unlikely to lead to the realization of universal happiness. This 64 paper seeks to establish why double standards exist in multinational corporations especially relating to their practices in third world and developing countries, where there are minimal standards for compliance. Philosophic approaches that look at the concept of happiness, such as those by the Dalai Lama and Maxwell (2003) tend to agree on what it is, and even may be achieved. However, determining the ethical behaviors that will lead to the realization of universal happiness is more difficult due to a range of different beliefs structures, concepts and approaches to the way in which ethical behavior may be determined. There have been approaches to try and impact on corporate behavior and reduce the problem of double standards, examples include international legislation as well as voluntary code such the UN Global Compact. However, it is likely that any changes will take time as attitudes and cultures need to adjust, not only with the development of acceptable ethical standards that can be used to diversity, but with the ability to appreciate and respect diversity within the corporate environment, but not leveraging it in order to gain commercially at the cost of others. This is discussed with reference to a number of philosophical and ethical frameworks, including Kant, Mills, stakeholder approaches to business, relativism, universalism and utilitarianism, the challenges to ethical behavior and examples of measures to increase ethical behaviour. This is a 5 page paper on beef irradiation. Irradiation is a process used to kill harmful molds, bacteria and pathogens in foods and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Overall, it has been found to be a more effective process than traditional methods in addition to the fact that there is little or no change to the texture, flavor or color of the meat. Beef irradiation is considered to be one of the most important because beef is often consumed when it is raw or partially cooked; irradiation kills E. coli 0157:H7 which is considered an “illegal adulterant” in beef and would lead to mass recalls if present; and, irradiated beef can be labeled “E. coli Free”. Because of the use of radiation in the process, consumer groups are concerned that the process may produce carcinogens and irradiation could also open the door for exploitation in that it lowers the bacteria levels found on spoiled meat. Irradiation however, is considered as a plausible alternative under kosher law which restricts the use of the traditional chemical and heat treatment processes used in the killing of bacteria on beef. Used in over 40 countries and approved by the U.N. World Health Organization, beef irradiation overall seems to have more advantages than disadvantages. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

This is a 5 page paper discussing Manes and Andrews’ 1993 biography of Microsoft’s Bill Gates. The 1993 biography “Gates: How Microsoft’s Mogul Reinvented an Industry” by Stephen Manes and Paul Andrews tells the story of the rise of Bill Gates and his company Microsoft during the early years of the computer software industry. The book is lengthy and does have several personal insights offered on Gates in the authors attempt to humanize the man deemed as America’s richest man. Manes and Andrews know a great deal about the computer industry and therefore this results in a great deal of detail about Microsoft and the industry and leaves less room for information about its central character, Gates. Nevertheless, the book still does Gates justice in revealing his motivation, competitiveness, work ethic and energy which led him to the top of his industry despite surrounding controversy, tradition and competition. This is a 6 page paper discussing colonial Latin America in relations to the patron-client relationship and social classes. While colonial Latin America was segregated into a hierarchy of social and class systems with the Spanish elite at the top, the maintenance of the system was possible by the textured social networks within communities which existed before the introduction of the Spaniards but nevertheless added the elite Spaniards as the ruling class. The Spaniards did their best to degrade the culture of the Native Indians by introducing Spanish customs and religion and separating the communities into barrios however although the Indians observed these new customs in a public sense, their private identity still contained traditional cultural, familial and social elements. Largely the Spanish elite ruled with stability based on the belief in the class system which expected them to manage the communities with justice. When that expectation failed however, consensus among the lower classes was obtained and riots ensued which led the way to eventual independence. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

This is a 5 page paper comparing three Microsoft operating systems: Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 98 SE (Second Edition). A comparison of three Microsoft operating systems, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) is best done through a comparison of firstly their system requirements which are the basics needed in order to run the system and secondly the features of the systems. The systems are based on the evolution of the Windows packages in which Windows 98 was originally an upgrade from Windows 95; Windows 2000 and ME (Millennium) was further an upgrade from Windows 98 and Windows NT; and lastly, Windows XP is still again above Windows 2000 but incorporating all of the top features of those operating systems which preceded it in addition to more comprehensive features regarding reliability, remote access and network administration among others. Not surprisingly then, each system higher within the evolution of the Windows family consists of considerably more features but also considerably higher system requirements in order to run the operating system. Professional versions also include more features which are dedicated to network capabilities and business applications and therefore the requirements and features are considerably more so than those of any Home versions of the product. 11 pages in length. Watergate proved to be the most significant turning point in the life of America's thirty-seventh president, Richard M. Nixon, as well as one of the significant turning points in American politics, as well. The scandal that took place in 1972 at Washington, D.C.'s Watergate apartment and office complex became the president's worst nightmare, inasmuch as he was caught virtually red-handed as the primary conspirator in the Democratic National Committee headquarters break-in. This infamous occurrence sparked an investigation that uncovered secretly made audio tapes of conversations that Nixon had with several top-positioned government employees attempting to secure Nixon's re-election by illegally – and unethically – infiltrating the opposition's home office. Indeed, Nixon's world came crashing down when the investigative trail lead directly to his authorization of such damning activity; it would take two years after this discovery for the president to resign in order to avoid being impeached. When assessing the impact that film has had upon the women's movement, it is not difficult to name at least a dozen examples off the top of one's head; indeed, the power of women is the primary focus of myriad films. Two in particular – Truman Capote's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" – address several elements of the women's movement within their somewhat related themes. Upon researching the historical backgrounds of the films, reading reviews and other writings pertaining to them, one can readily surmise that there are many facets to being a woman, some that are quite blatant, many more that are both subtle and fundamental at the same time. For as long as mankind has lived within a more communal environment, the split between a relative handful of ruling public figures and their huddled masses has been both palpable and pained; those few in charge were forever in possession of the greatest wealth compared with the general populace who typically eked out a meager existence. This reality has not changed much over the centuries with the same handful of power mongers controlling the distribution of wealth of an entire country, often reserving the greatest financial rewards for themselves without even a thought for how such actions impact the greater good of society in particular and the entire human race in general. 5 pages in length. 3 sources are cited.
