An 8 page paper discussing the ongoing crisis between the Serbs and Kosovo. Some analysts attribute the reasons for today's war to the events of the 'Field of Blackbirds' battle of 1389, but that portion of history only colors the current crisis without fully explaining it. The Kosovars refused international attempts at peace in order to preserve principle, even though they understood they were greatly outnumbered by the Serbs and ill-equipped to resist them. As Milosevic's resolve only appears to have been strengthened following his indictment, there remains no end in sight. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

While it may be overstatement to claim that the war in the former Yugoslavia could become as legendary to us as the Trojan War, there is little doubt that it is to the people of the region, those most affected by it. The Region The geography of the area is such that it holds both wide expanses of fertile farmland and majestic mountains. The area of the former Yugoslavia that today is called Serbia and Montenegro is about the size of the state of Kentucky. Largely mountainous, "The northeastern section of Serbia is part of the rich, fertile Danubian Plain drained by the Danube, Tisa, Sava, and Morava River systems. Montenegro is a jumbled mass of mountains, containing also some grassy slopes and fertile river valleys" (Anonymous A0108157). Crop growing seasons are relatively short and the winters snowy, but summers can be very hot, particularly in the regions closest to the Mediterranean. The largest portion of the region has weather patterns typical of other mountainous regions, in which the mountains work their own effects on the weather patterns observed. The area is one of high annual precipitation, and the combination of rainfall and fertile river valleys results in food, at least for farmers and in times of peace, being plentiful.
