Xanax is widely prescribed for the treatment of panic disorder. Even when used under the supervision of a physician, however, Xanax is associated with certain adverse concerns. Xanax used without such supervision can be a recipe for substance abuse and/or substance dependence. Zanax, however, is not currently included in the the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders guidelines for potentially abused drugs. The drugs wide availability and its growing popularity necessitates that revisions be made to the DSM-IV to correct this omission. Zanax comes in pill form, time release form, and a lingual spray form of the drug is now being considered (Clinician Reviews, 2003; Formulary, 2003; Drug Week, 2004). Less positive, however, is the fact that Zanax has become a popular street drug. To further complicate the issue, Zanax is now being released in its generic form (Formularly, 2006). This will undoubtedly make the drug both cheaper and even more available on the black market. More and more prescription drugs are indeed becoming the drugs of choice for illicit drug users. McCarthy (2007, 1509) observes, in fact, that of the drug-related visits to the emergency rooms across the nation in 2005: "31% involved illicit drugs only, 27% involved pharmaceuticals only, and 36% involved a combination of illicit drugs, alcohol, and/or pharmaceuticals". Young people are attracted to prescription drugs like Xanax because of their ready availability and the false perception that because they are prescription drugs they are safe (McCarthy, 2007).
