paper properly! In looking at the world order historically, one should take a step back and see what the twentieth century has wrought. The first half of the 1900s saw two large wars that effectively destroyed the European power system (Roberts 427). The first war began in 1914 which signaled the end to the peace which had existed in Europe since 1871 (427). After World War I, things changed dramatically. Four European empires had collapsed (427). In assessing the impact of the second world war on European empires it is important to review the events of the war, and the ramifications of such events. Some think of World War II as two separate entities ("World" PG). The first concerned Europe. There, Hitler had two aims, the first of which was to seize all of Europe and North Africa in order to dominate the Mediterranean (PG). His second goal was to wipe out communism while eliminating the Jews (PG). Mussolini, on the other hand, had his own ambitions which was to dominate both the Mediterranean and the Balkans (PG). During the war, England and France fought to preserve their own countries and stabilize Europe at the same time ("World" PG). Roosevelt got the United States into the picture as well and his goal was to end the destruction brought about by Nazism as well as to spread democracy throughout Europe (PG). The Soviet goal was to drive out the Nazis and spread communism (PG). That was what had occurred in Europe. The Far East was another matter.
