evil man. However, throughout the play we see that it is perhaps the Queen herself who is seen as evil and vindictive and conniving and shrewish. The following paper examines the female characters of the Queen and Pamina in Mozarts play, discussing the portrayal of women and then discussing whether those views are still valid today. The Queen and Pamina In Act I we see a young man, Tamino, encounter the Queen. The Queen promises him the hand of her daughter if he can rescue her from the evil man who abducted her, Sarastro. This seems to be a relatively simple introduction into the characters and into the nature of men and women as seen by Mozart. We see that the Queen is a mystical woman of some kind with great powers. But, we also see that she is surely not strong enough to take her daughter back. Her daughter is caught in the symbolically typical position where a man controls her and where she has no power. She is a commodity to be fought over, the typical damsel in distress. When we first see Pamina she has just been recaptured from having escaped after Monostatos has essentially tried to rape her. He treats her brutally because he is angry she escaped and he is angry that he did not get what he wanted, sex from Pamina. This clearly establishes an attitude towards women that they are perhaps weak creatures who are nothing more than sexual objects, but it also hints at the evil nature of men towards women in terms of rape and abuse. This could easily be a strong argument for the story and the theme of protecting women from men such as Monostatos. But, in all honesty, later in the play we see that this ...
