It is disruptive because while people may have thought it was a good idea, there have been many problems with it, and upgrades necessary, not to mention more trouble in terms of security. It is much easier to break into a wireless system for example than it is one that is networked with hard wires. Also, it seems that there are many difficulties in respect to routing as there are compatibility issues. While the Mac Airport was ready earlier than the current wireless networks for the PC, even Airport had its issues and Airport Extreme had come aboard as a better model. Still, few Internet Service Providers support these networks. In some way, it seems that this technology has jumped ahead of a market that was not ready for it. In order to understand why this is a disruptive technology, it pays to look at the concept in general. What is a disruptive technology exactly? According to Bank, a disruptive technology begins as an untested product that is surrounded by a new business model that only offers low profit margins (Van Horn, 2002). When it first comes out, nobody wants it (2002). It is not like something that everyone has been waiting for; rather, the technology is not even something desirable. It seems like a ludicrous thing to invent and perhaps the inventors do it just because they can. That said, the author points out something quite interesting.
