Well-baby checkups are one of the most critical components in insuring long-term health in newborns. To be most effective they should not only be thorough but frequent. Pediatric health guidelines (2006) recommends seven visits to the pediatrician in the first year of an infants life. The specifics of the checkup in theory should not vary greatly with the babys culture or race. In practice, however, certain considerations come into play with certain populations. Some Native American infants, for example, are not only prone to certain diseases but also to potential health impacts from certain environmental factors. To assume that an infant presents different risk factors simply on the basis of their culture or race and to vary the specifics of the well baby exam, however, in consideration of that assumption is a tragic mistake. There is tremendous variation within all races in terms of the factors that impact health. The Native American culture and racial group, in fact, is represented more by diversity in these factors than it is by uniformity. Perhaps the most important factor in well-baby exams for this group is establishing a rapport with the mother, a rapport that will gain her trust and her compliance in issues affecting her babys health. This will yield factual information regarding the babys background and environment and this information can be used to tailor the information that is presented into the most effective format.
