In order to adopt a sociological approach to health and welfare inequalities, it is helpful to consider the way in which social and health issues are interrelated and the effect which policies relating to social disadvantage will have an impact on matters of public health. For example, it is evident that there will be a link between poverty, unemployment levels and standards of health, and that these issues cannot productively be considered in isolation from one another. Sociologists will therefore attempt to identify the root causes of social inequality, rather than merely addressing the symptoms, and will consider the effectiveness of social policies in alleviating the social conditions which result in disadvantage. In the UK, for example, there has in the past few decades been a move away from the prioritising of state health care and towards the private sector, which exemplifies the extent to which the welfare state as a whole could be seen as being in decline. In the post-war era, it was generally recognised that not only was it necessary to rebuild damaged infrastructures, but also to devise ways in which the majority of the population could achieve greater entitlement to health care, education and social security. ...
