But what is voter manipulation? Though experts have many theories, the main one is that voters decide to not vote for the candidate of their choice to ensure that a candidate less tolerable doesnt make it into office. This happened in 1999 in Malaysia, as well as 1997 in the Canadian federal election. In the first case, the National Front took most of the seats, which was unexpected. In the second case, the Liberal Party still won - but by not quite so much as expected. Introduction Whenever anyone steps into the voting booth, there is a concern that the vote might be "tainted" somehow; with the person pulling the lever a victim of voter manipulation. As a result, throughout the democratic voting process, there are procedures put into place to prevent voter manipulation. But is all of this angst and effort necessary? According to Dowdking and Van Hees (2006), not at all. The contention of these two authors is that concerns about "voter sincerity" when it comes to manipulation should be concerns - because one can tell the difference between sincere and insincere behavior (Dowding and Van Hees, 2006). Results from a social choice, they point out, drive many modern voting theories (Dowding and Van Hees, 2006). But is voter manipulation necessarily such a bad thing?
