there was never any real victory and also because many people believed it was a war that should not have concerned the United States. It is also a war that has often been brought back into the media in the past few years due to its similarities to the War in Iraq being fought today. It was, to say the least, a very tumultuous war that still affects many people today. The following paper provides an overview of the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. United States Involvement in the Vietnam War The major conflict, the conflict that started the entire war, involved two different political sides in Vietnam. In the most basic of terms there was the south and there was the north. The south, ruled in the beginning by Ngo Dinh Diem, was supported by the United States and by France, who warred in Vietnam just prior to the involvement of the United States. The north was ultimately ruled by Ho Chi Minh who sided with communism. As such the primary foundation of the war involved the struggles between communism and the free world. Prior to the United States becoming actively involved in Vietnam through warfare they were strongly supportive, and backed, actions that were in the favor of the south. For example, Diem had "strong backing from the United States" when he came into the office in 1954 (Vietnam War.com, 2007). It was, however, not until the French pulled out of the region, stopping their involvement in the war, that the United States became actively involved in warfare within Vietnam.
