This is useful because the relationship can be quantitatively assessed to determine whether any correlation that exists is likely to be the result of random chance or is "significant". This paper will use a hypothetical example of duration of unemployment experienced by Philadelphia citizens, considered in conjunction with age. This paper will assess the collected data and determine whether or not a significant relationship exists between age and the duration of unemployment. This paragraph helps the student define some statistical terms and offer an overview of the data. The data in this study was collected from a sample size of 50 workers who had received unemployment benefits, taking note of both their ages and the amount of time they were on unemployment before finding more work. In analyzing this data, one looks for information such as the mean, or average, of the collected values, the median (mid-range value of the set), and mode (most frequently occurring value); as well as more complex data such as standard deviation (the degree to which data in the set is spread), standard error (standard deviation for a particular parameter of the data), and standard variance (measure of the dispersion of data within a particular sample) (Marsh, 1996).
