child labor are more evident than ever before. Young children forced to work due to poverty creates a vicious cycle of dependency, and obliterates educational opportunities. Response to this tragedy continues to become more vocal and more widespread as tolerance decreases around the world for such practices. U.S. Foreign Policy and Child Labor It is estimated that around the world, there are over 250 million children working, which illuminates the enormity of this problem (Collingsworth, 2003). The next logical question is why - why would families put their children to work? The answer is poverty (Collingsworth, 2003). However, the real tragedy is the cycle this creates (Collingsworth, 2003). By putting children to work at a young age and therefore removing the possibility of education, essentially then these children become condemned to a life of poverty (Collingsworth, 2003). The U.N. estimates that 250 million children under the age of 14 work, half of them full time. They work in occupations that are often dangerous or harmful to their health or development. They are often work for extremely low wages. In addition, their work leaves them little or no time to attend school (Sweatfree Schools, 2003). In the wake of this issue have been numerous human rights groups and government legislation designed to deal with this important issue (Collingsworth, 2003). Many of these groups work diligently to spread the word about banning products made be the efforts of such labor, and these programs have met with varying levels of success (Collingsworth, 2003). ...
