Although the illness is usually described singularly as diabetes, there are two distinct types, and while there are similarities and cardiovascular disease usually characterizes both, their causes are different, as are the treatments and recommended prevention. In order to gain a greater understanding of this affliction, it is recommended that a crash course in anatomy is taken to understand how the human body functions. For example, the body requires glucose (sugar) that it receives from the intake of food, which serves as its fuel or energy source (Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes 1759). Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas (Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes 1759). It is insulin that helps to regulate the bodys level of blood sugar, ensuring it stays within a normal range (Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes 1759). In addition, it is insulin that is responsible for transferring the sugar from the blood to the cells (Type 2 Diabetes). When this happens effortlessly, the body operates as it should. However, if too much glucose builds up in the blood and is not properly transferred to the cells, the body begins to feel weak and fatigued from lack of energy (Type 2 Diabetes). If this buildup continues over a period of time, various parts of the body can become adversely affected, including the eyes, kidneys, heart, nerves and circulation (particularly in the feet) (Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes 1759).
